Reading
How can parents and carers encourage a love of reading at home?
Here are some tips from our Literacy Coordinator:
- Engage with your child with Young Adult Literature (often advertised on Booktok) or books that relate to their favourite TV show or film. We have a BookTok and Film Adaptation section in the WA library. Encourage them to choose a book from this section.
- Graphic novels can be the key in sparking the interest of teenagers who may feel intimidated by big or dense books. We are currently widening our graphic novels in the library, so encourage them to take out one of these books.
- Engage with your child with non-fiction texts or the news on issues that they care about (eg climate change, human rights, politics, true crime).
- Try free audio-books on Spotify so your child can listen to stories on the way to and from school.
- Model reading at home. Express your interest and talk about what you are reading. Demonstrate to your teenager that reading is a pleasure and not a chore.
