Bringing art to language learning
‘Culture is seen by researchers as a necessary component in the second language class.’ (Bilash, 2011).
Learning culture is vital in MFL classrooms because it puts the language into context. Thus, calligraphy and art using the Arabic alphabets are part of Arab culture.
In this cross curricular lesson during WA Online, Year 7 students were asked to use different methods, such as paint and calligraphy, to write Arabic words that they have learned so far. This lesson was a ‘screen free activity’ where students enjoyed competing with each other to produce the best artwork.
