The Year 12 IB Biology class were taken on a trip to the Imperial College Reach Out Lab. We spent the day extracting DNA from different types of food using a PCR machine and then investigated if those foods were genetically modified by carrying out a process called electrophoresis. We learned to use a lot of equipment that we don’t usually have access to in school labs in order to complete our practical work. We were warmly welcomed by the Imperial College mentors and students who took us through the day and aided us in adapting to high level equipment and its intricate uses. It was a great experience to not only further develop our knowledge about DNA but to also have a
chance to experience such exciting techniques.
We really enjoyed our day at the Reach Out Lab and hope to go back soon to take part in experiments which will enable us to learn and inquire more about IB Biology
