Back to NewsWA student awarded third place at Speak Out competition!
Over the past two terms, students in Year 10 have been developing their public speaking skills with the Jack Petchey and Speakers Trust initiative, Speak Out.

They began with a workshop in December, during which they looked at the core components of a speech - content, delivery and structure - and worked on the communication skills needed to engage others while speaking about something they care about. Ms Harvey-Williams said, “It was wonderful to see all of the students engaged while attempting a new challenge - public speaking is never easy! They should be extremely proud of themselves!” A special mention was given to the runner up, Edward, and the two students who made it through to the regional final, Harezo and Zainab.
The regional final was held in January at All Saints Catholic College. Ms Harvey-Williams tells us more...
“Myself and Ms Hilliard were delighted to attend the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge regional finals with Zainab and Harezo. Both girls went through a day of workshops and spoke in front of the whole of Year 10 in assembly before being selected for the regional finals. They did a fantastic job representing the school and the broad opinions and perspective of WA students. Harezo spoke about ‘Pineapple on Pizza’ (a metaphor for the privilege that we have to make our own choices) and Zainab spoke about how the school system perpetuates capitalism. We are so proud of all their hard work and want to say a special congratulations to Harezo for coming in 3rd place!”
Well done to Harezo and Zainab!
