WA students sing with Grammy Award winner for BBC project

Last year some very special filming took place with students at WA, which could only be revealed at the end of January when the BBC launched their ‘Get Singing’ campaign.

IMG 2517The BBC team took over the building and filled the corridors with song, as it filmed workshops that would form the learning resources for the Get Singing initiative. Not only that, but they brought along Grammy Award winning artist, Jacob Collier to lead activities and show our students the joy of singing one another! Ms Sweeney-Ellis and our singers did us proud and have helped create inspiring videos that will be used by schools all over the country. Image3

It aims to provide teachers and vocal leaders with engaging resources to encourage collective singing among 11–14 year olds in and out of schools across the UK, with Jacob Collier - who has collaborated with artists like Coldplay, SZA, Stormzy and Joni Mitchell - involved as Ambassador and Advocate.

Our singers were treated to a preview of the videos before they were released. Year 8 student, Blanca said, “When they showed us the video, it felt so unreal; it hadn’t fully sunk in until that moment that I was part of something shown on the BBC.”

Fred added, “Singing with a Grammy winner was a surreal masterclass that completely changed my perspective on what a voice can do. Seeing the final video was incredibly emotional, as it proved how hundreds of unique voices can unite to create one powerful sound.”

Ms Thomas-Payne, WA’s Business Director, thanked all involved, saying, “The students were absolutely fantastic and their love and enjoyment of singing really shines through the screen.”
