Back to NewsWA student's speech quoted in the House of Commons!
Earlier this year, one of our Speak Out regional finalists delivered her speech, ‘the Value of Time’, on the topic of smartphone use, at the Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster regional final, and caught the attention of the Member of Parliament for Kensington and Bayswater (see the news post dated 7th February 2025).
Since then, Zayneb has become something of a star! Following her speech, Joe Powell MP invited her to take part in the Safer Phones Campaign in Kensington and Bayswater, where she impressed attendees at a Safer Phones town hall meeting. Mr Beckett, from the MP’s office said, “Zayneb was brilliant! We really needed her expertise and perspective at the event.” Zayneb was even contacted about her speech by Sky News!
Mr Powell MP also requested to use parts of Zayneb’s speech in the recent parliamentary debate on the Safer Phones Bill, which he co-sponsored. We are proud to share some of his contribution to the debate here, which did indeed quote the words of Zayneb.
Congratulations to Zayneb for reflecting so deeply and articulately on this topic which affects the wellbeing of so many, for making her voice heard and inspiring action. It serves as evidence to all of us that young people really can make a difference in communities and make an impact on the government.
Zayneb kindly agreed to share her speech, which can be found in our newsletter dated 14th March 2025. Enjoy!
