Back to NewsCambridge University visit inspires confidence and ambition among Year 12s
I, alongside five of my peers in Year 12, had the opportunity to attend a visit to Jesus College at the University of Cambridge.

The trip offered a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insight into both student life and the Cambridge admissions process.
A memorable aspect of the visit was speaking with current undergraduate students across a wide range of disciplines, including Natural Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Arts, Humanities, and Political Sciences. Through these conversations, we were able to develop a clearer understanding of the Oxbridge application process, especially the emphasis on interviews and subject-specific assessments. The students also provided practical advice on super-curricular activities, as well as how to effectively communicate academic interest within personal statements and interviews. Personally, I found this especially useful, as it made the process feel far more accessible and achievable.
We also had the privilege of meeting Geoff Parks, Professor of Nuclear Engineering, Admissions Tutor, and former Head of Admissions. His insights were particularly valuable in highlighting what distinguishes strong applicants, emphasising the importance of intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, and a passion for one’s subject. He also offered an engaging explanation of the collegiate system and how it shapes both academic and student life at Cambridge.
Overall, the visit was both insightful and inspiring. It not only deepened our understanding of university life but also encouraged many of us to approach our academic futures with greater confidence and ambition. For me, the experience has made the prospect of applying to universities such as Oxbridge feel far more tangible.
